Many of you dear readers will remember this exciting season of touring car racing. The year was 1973, and Jochen Neerpasch had recently moved from Ford in Cologne to arch rival BMW in Munich. He had taken his best technician Martin Braungart with him, and together they were developing the newly-established teams factory racing Coupé for the European Touring Car Championship. What followed was a genuine classic motor racing story. The two giants Ford and BMW, flanked by privateers Alpina and Schnitzer, threw everything at winning the title. The drivers were racing touring cars worth more than 100,000 Deutschmarks, which bore only cosmetic similarities to their road-going counterparts. And the drivers were equally refined as their cars, put through rigorous mental and physical training to make sure they were always in top form. Alongside the touring car heroes there were more than half a dozen Grand Prix drivers, and even World Champions: Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Jacky Ickx, Reine Wissell, Jody Schekter and Chris Amon, all raced these excellent touring cars. Their rivals were the likes of Stuck, Quester, Mass, Glemser, Hezemans and Fitzpatrick. The season took a dramatic course, with the duel of the two manufacturers spilling over into the German Championship. In the end, BMW won on the international stage with the winged CSL Coupés, while the Escort of Dieter Glemser clinched the German title. The stories from those days are now legendary, and you can read all about it from the key-players themselves. Far away from Europe, Toyota had built a Group 7 sports car in the late 60s. Find the first part of the background story about this fascinating Japanese design and the start of sports car racing in the land of the rising sun in this issue. Of course, thats not all weve got for you. For those long winter evenings weve collected plenty more exciting racing stories. We hope you enjoy the new issue, and wish you all the best for the new season!
